Amish Hamburger Steak Bake

Ingredients:

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1½ lbs ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp dried thyme

For the Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Hamburger Steaks:

    • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and dried thyme. Mix until just combined.
    • Shape the mixture into 4-6 patties.
  2. Sear the Patties:

    • Heat a large skillet over medium heat and lightly grease it.
    • Sear the hamburger steaks for about 2 minutes per side until browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Make the Gravy:

    • In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
    • Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until it turns lightly golden.
    • Gradually add the beef broth and milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps.
    • Stir in Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper.
    • Bring the gravy to a simmer and cook for about 5 minutes until it thickens.
  4. Assemble the Dish:

    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Place the seared hamburger steaks into a greased baking dish.
    • Pour the gravy over the patties, ensuring they’re well-covered.
  5. Bake:

    • Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the hamburger steaks are cooked through and tender.
  6. Serve:

    • Once done, remove from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes.
    • Serve the hamburger steaks with the rich gravy on top. This dish pairs wonderfully with mashed potatoes, rice, or a side of vegetables for a comforting family meal.
